Which Fort Bragg Gate Should You Live Near?

The best Fort Bragg gate for your home search depends on your daily workplace, reporting time, and the gate’s operating schedule. Before choosing a community, confirm where you’ll work and compare the full drive from the property to that location. A home close to a gate can still leave you with a longer commute across the installation.

By James M. Walker, All American Realty Group. Gate schedules and access conditions can change; confirm current information before traveling.

James M. Walker is a real estate agent with All American Realty Group. He has lived in the Fayetteville area for more than 35 years, and when military buyers ask where they should live, he starts with a question:

“Which side of Fort Bragg will you work on?”

That answer helps narrow the search before you spend hours looking at homes in locations that may not fit your routine.

Why should you choose a gate before choosing a community?

Your gate helps determine which home locations make practical sense for your daily commute.

Fort Bragg covers a large area. Being near the installation boundary doesn’t necessarily mean being near your workplace.

Your commute includes three parts:

  1. Driving from your home to the gate.
  2. Getting through the entrance.
  3. Driving from the gate to your workplace.

A listing that says “10 minutes to Fort Bragg” may only describe the first part.

Before narrowing your home search, James recommends confirming your routine workplace with your sponsor. Your initial reporting location may be different from where you’ll work afterward.

How does the All American Gate closure affect your search?

The closure means you need to evaluate alternate entrances and current routes before relying on older commute estimates.

The All American Gate and an affected section of the freeway on post closed beginning July 27, 2026, for construction scheduled to last up to two years.

This does not mean the entire All American Freeway is closed.

The All American Visitor Control Center remains open, but the gate closure affects through traffic entering and leaving the installation.

With vehicles using alternate entrances, check the route you would actually drive at your expected reporting time. A route that worked before construction may not reflect your daily commute now.

Which gates should you compare from the south and west?

Yadkin Road, Longstreet, Chicken Road, and Canopy Lane are entrances to investigate when comparing suitable properties around the southern and western approaches.

The gates discussed in James’s video are:

GateGate numberPlanning note
Yadkin Road4Compare the property's connecting route and the remaining drive on post.
Longstreet1Investigate whether this approach fits your workplace and home location.
Chicken Road2Compare this route with other suitable entrances rather than assuming the nearest gate is fastest.
Canopy Lane19Confirm current access and whether this route fits your daily schedule.

Fort Bragg’s construction-period announcements identify these as 24-hour alternatives. Operating conditions can change, so confirm current information before traveling.

For a home search, James may compare selected locations in Fayetteville or Hoke County, depending on your workplace, budget, and preferences.

That doesn’t mean every property in those areas has the same commute. The actual address is what gets checked.

Which gates should you compare near Spring Lake and the north side?

R. Miller, Honeycutt Road, Manchester Road, and Butner Road are entrances to investigate when comparing northern approaches.

These routes may come into the conversation when looking at Spring Lake, North Fayetteville, and nearby Harnett County communities.

GateGate numberPlanning note
Honeycutt Road10A 24-hour alternative identified in the construction-period announcements.
R. Miller11A 24-hour alternative identified in the construction-period announcements.
Butner Road12Has limited operating hours; verify the current schedule.
Manchester Road18Has limited operating hours; verify the current schedule.

Do not assume a limited-hour gate will be available for an early report time, late return, weekend, or holiday.

Before choosing a property around one entrance, identify an alternate route you could use when necessary.

What if you’re assigned to Pope Army Airfield?

Start with your actual workplace and ask your sponsor which entrance makes sense for that location.

Northern approaches may deserve an early look, but the right answer still depends on the property, gate availability, and where you need to go after entering.

James can compare potential home locations around that information with you.

You do not need to post your unit details or sensitive reporting information in public comments to ask for help with your home search.

How do gate hours change your housing decision?

A nearby gate is useful only when it is available at the times you need it.

A property might look convenient during a midday showing. Your actual drive could be different when you report early, leave late, or travel on a weekend.

Before making an offer:

  • Check the entrance’s current operating schedule.
  • Confirm whether your normal reporting time fits.
  • Identify a backup gate.
  • Compare the complete route to work.
  • Test the drive at relevant times when possible.

Your home search should reflect your normal routine, including the inconvenient parts.

Should you choose the shortest commute or a different setting?

That depends on what matters to you and the trade-offs you’re comfortable making.

Some buyers prioritize a shorter drive. Others are willing to travel farther for more land, a particular home layout, or a different setting.

James asks buyers whether they prefer being close to everyday conveniences or having more space around the property.

Then the locations and routes get compared together.

Your commute is your decision. James’s job is to help you understand what you’re choosing before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Which Fort Bragg gate is best for buying a home nearby?

There isn’t one gate that works best for every buyer. Start with your workplace and schedule, then compare individual properties along suitable routes.

Is the entire All American Freeway closed?

No. The construction closure affects the All American Gate and an identified section of the freeway on post. Check official detour information for the route you need.

Are all Fort Bragg gates open 24 hours?

No. Some entrances operate around the clock, while others have limited schedules. Confirm the current hours before planning your commute around a particular gate.

Does living near a gate guarantee a short commute?

No. Include the entrance queue and the remaining drive across the installation. A short drive to the boundary may still leave significant travel afterward.

Can James help you compare locations before you arrive?

Yes. James can discuss location trade-offs and offers recorded video tours and live video walkthroughs for remote buyers. Your sponsor can help confirm the workplace and on-post route.
