PCSing to Fort Bragg and ready to buy? James helps military buyers and veterans explore homes, arrange remote tours, and consider how a purchase fits their timing and next move.

Start here: before choosing a house, find out where you're actually reporting

Orders to Fort Bragg don't tell the whole commute story. The installation is spread out, with multiple entrances serving different areas. A home can look close to Fort Bragg on a map and still leave a substantial drive between the gate and the workplace.

James M. Walker with All American Realty Group recommends starting with the reporting location, then working outward to the gates, routes, and communities that fit.

1. Confirm the reporting location, and the regular workplace

Ask the unit sponsor for the reporting instructions and, when available, the location where daily work will take place. The initial check-in location may be different from the eventual workplace. Useful questions include:

  • Where should the service member report upon arrival?
  • Where will they normally work?
  • Which gates do people assigned there commonly use?
  • What arrival time or shift should the commute be planned around?

There's no need to share sensitive assignment details on a real estate website or public form. The goal is to understand the general location and practical route.

2. Learn which side of Fort Bragg matters to the move

The closest gate to a house isn't necessarily the most useful gate for the job. These are general geographic starting points, rather than recommendations that every household use a particular entrance.

Gate or approachGeneral location and nearby search areas
Yadkin RoadFayetteville-facing side, relevant when comparing west Fayetteville locations and routes from communities farther south.
Reilly Road / Rock Merritt AvenueAnother Fayetteville-side approach. Buyers may recognize Reilly Road on the city side and Rock Merritt Avenue on post.
All American FreewayA major approach from Fayetteville and I-295. Its gate closure currently changes how this route can be used.
Honeycutt RoadNorth Fayetteville approach, worth evaluating for homes near the Ramsey Street/NC 210 corridor.
R. MillerNorthern approach to consider when comparing Spring Lake and nearby Harnett County locations.
Manchester RoadSpring Lake/Pope-side approach, particularly relevant when researching a Pope Army Airfield assignment.
Butner RoadSpring Lake-side approach; check current operations before making it part of a regular commute.
Longstreet and Chicken RoadWestern and southwestern approaches to investigate when comparing Raeford and Hoke County locations.

Gate schedules, access eligibility, traffic, and construction can change. Confirm the current route with the installation and unit sponsor before relying on it.

3. Understand how I-295 changes the search

I-295, the Fayetteville Outer Loop, gives buyers another way to connect around the area. It links the region's I-95 approaches and connects with important roads around Fayetteville and Fort Bragg. That makes it worth checking when comparing Hope Mills, west Fayetteville, north Fayetteville, Eastover, and surrounding locations.

However, being near I-295 doesn't automatically create a short commute. The full trip still includes:

  • The drive from the house to the interchange.
  • The route to an available gate.
  • Any gate traffic.
  • The remaining drive to the workplace.

James helps buyers compare that full route instead of stopping the clock at the installation entrance.

Important: All American Gate construction

As of October 2026, the All American Gate is closed for a major freeway and bridge project. The closure began July 27, 2026, with work expected to require up to 24 months. The All American Visitor Control Center remains open, but visitors must use an available alternative gate to enter. Older videos, directions, and commute estimates may assume this entrance is available. Check current installation notices before planning around it.

4. PCSing to Pope? Start with the airfield location

Some incoming households know the assignment as Pope Air Force Base. Its current name is Pope Army Airfield, and it is part of Fort Bragg. Pope sits at the northern end of the installation. An assignment there can lead to a different home search from an assignment elsewhere on post.

Spring Lake and nearby Harnett County communities are worth comparing, along with other locations that fit the buyer's priorities. Manchester Road is one approach to investigate with the sponsor, subject to current gate operations.

The right question is: How does this specific home connect to the actual workplace?

5. Choose the tradeoffs that work for daily life

Once the workplace and likely routes are understood, the community search becomes more useful. Some buyers prioritize less driving. Others prefer more land, a particular home layout, or closer access to shopping and restaurants. James helps explain those choices. He doesn't decide how much commuting someone should accept.

Whenever practical, drive the route at the time it would normally be used. A quiet Sunday afternoon can give a very different impression from a weekday arrival.

A house can be the right size, the right price, and still be in the wrong location for the daily routine.

Start the conversation before choosing the house

James has lived in the Fayetteville area for 35+ years and helps military families and veterans evaluate homes around Fort Bragg. Buyers can start by discussing their timing, general work location, preferred setting, and housing needs. From there, James can help narrow the communities and arrange in-person or remote tours.
